Support Services

Empowering positive pathways for people with disability!

Breakaway offers people with disabilities the opportunity to experience some time away from family….and some time to make new friends. Most of all, we support families to enhance their lifestyle by supporting the whole family unit.

To access our Respite House, people with disability must live in the family home and be over 18 years of age.

The Respite House is open 24 hours per day for 47 weeks per year (excluding public holidays). Each year, Breakaway can provide 36 days of centre-based overnight respite per guest.

We provide care by trained support staff, meeting the needs of each person in a way which respects his/her individuality.

Care is taken to ensure that daily routines are adhered to as closely as possible so that schooling, work and recreation are continued without interruption.

The Breakaway Respite House has:

  • 4 bedrooms, each with fully adjustable beds
  • 2 bathrooms, one of which is fully wheel-chair accessible, with separate toilet
  • Kitchen
  • Lounge and family room
  • Outdoor area with seating and a BBQ
  • Vehicles for community access
  • 7 seater outdoor heated spa
  • 2 staff rostered each night
  • Lifting devices

Breakaway is a wonderful place, a home away from home

Music and Movement

We believe that dance is for everyone and that each individual has character and style to bring. Breakaway’s Music and Movement sessions developed from participation in music workshops with Access Arts. From this, it was established that there was a need for this type of activity within the disability sector.

This program has a strong focus on movement and dance with the use of voice and instruments to help with coordination, control and finding the beat.

Who can get involved?

Anyone over the age of 5 years can get involved. This program is structured to teach individuals with a wide range of abilities.

Lesson times and structures?

Each session runs for one hour during a weekday. We are also able to run specialised sessions if required. For extra session information or queries contact our office.

Your Life Your Choice

Breakaway is an endorsed host provider for the Your Life Your Choice (YLYC) programme, which currently provides the framework for how self-directed support operates in Queensland.

It is a key part in preparing Queenslanders for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

“Self-direction” means being the driver of your own life, your goals and how you reach them. Self-directing your disability support means that you – with help from the people you choose – design and manage your support services in the way that best suits your needs.

If you have individual ongoing funding from Disability Services, and the support you need is not for an emergency or crisis situation, talk to your local Disability Services Officer about the Your Life Your Choice programme. Following an assessment, you will receive written confirmation of both your assessed needs and your current funding amount. This information may then be forwarded to YLYC Host Providers when obtaining quotes for the provision of support services.

It is important to remember that if your needs change at any time, you should contact your local Disability Services Officer for a review.

Further information regarding the Your Life Your Choice programme is available at Alternatively, general information about this programme may be obtained from the Breakaway office.

My daughter has been very happy and content since transferring to YLYC. It has been an easy process that has allowed us flexibility.
